Compact porcelain has become the most discussed surface for tabletops. It also goes by sintered stone, porcelain ceramic and compact surface. They all describe the same material.
How it is made
Clay, feldspar, quartz and natural mineral powders are ground very fine, then pressed under high pressure and fired at high temperature. That process closes the voids inside the material.
What separates the result from natural stone is not, as most people assume, the look — the pattern is printed digitally and imitates marble veining convincingly. The real difference is that it has no pores.
What “no pores” means in practice
Natural stone is porous. Its surface holds micro-voids invisible to the eye. Red wine, lemon juice, olive oil and coffee work into those voids and leave a mark over time. This is why marble tables are sealed, and why the sealant has to be renewed.
Compact porcelain has no such voids. A spill sits on the surface and wipes away. In daily use that means:
- Red wine left overnight leaves no mark
- Acids such as lemon and vinegar do not dull the surface
- A hot pan can go straight down
- No sealing required
Against marble
Marble is calcium carbonate — chemically, a stone that reacts with acid. Spill lemon juice and a dull mark appears. This is called etching, and wiping will not remove it: the surface itself has changed. It is the complaint marble owners raise most often.
Hardness differs too. On the Mohs scale marble sits around 3–4; compact porcelain around 7. The porcelain surface resists scratching markedly better.
So why is marble still chosen? Because it is real. Light travels into it, the veining comes from within the stone, every slab is unique. On a dining table in a formal room that difference shows. Compact porcelain imitates it very well — but it imitates.
Against granite
Granite is harder than marble and more acid-resistant, but it is porous too. Its patterns are also limited: granite reads as speckled and does not give the veined elegance of marble. Common on kitchen worktops, less so on dining tables.
Which belongs where?
- In the kitchen — compact porcelain. For a surface used three times a day, wiped constantly and asked to take a hot pan, it is the easier choice by a wide margin.
- In the dining room — it depends. If the table is mostly for guests and you want the depth of real stone, marble or travertine. If you use that room daily as well, porcelain again.
Where to be careful
Compact porcelain is not flawless. Two points deserve attention.
Impact. Hard but brittle. A heavy object dropped on a corner can chip it. Edge profile matters here — a chamfered edge takes impact better than a sharp square one.
Thickness. Thin slabs (6–12 mm) need support underneath. Thicknesses used for tabletops are generally 12 mm and above; thinner slabs are meant for wall cladding.
